Kizuna started out as the brain child of Cesar Perez, former head chef of Ra Sushi Lombard, and Eric Song, a Chicago restaurateur and proprietor of Rollapalooza in Lakeview and Komorebi in Wicker Park. The pair came together to combine the freshest fish with an open-mindedness to explore amazing new takes on what sushi rolls could be, combining traditional favorites with wholly new, creative concepts.
In true Chicago fashion, Kizuna takes inspiration from a crossing and fusion from the many cultures of our great city. From our Mexican-inspired Tequila roll with pairing fresh tuna and yellowtail with fresh lime, cilantro and jalapeno to our famous Korean take on spicy miso soup with Japanese rayu.
We explore the choicest of imported ingredients and one of our favorites is the forbidden black rice. Dating back from ancient China, this superfood rice was originally reserved only for the emperor! Slightly chewy, a little sweet and with nutty undertones, try it on our wild Black Monster or Mafia rolls. The former is like a decadent sushi cake with crunchy spicy mix, shrimp tempura and cream cheese – it’s sinful! The latter is what every spicy tuna roll wants to grow up to be, enough said. Add it to any roll! Especially unagi – the savory sweetness of the eel pairs perfectly.
For those more traditionally inclined, worry not. Our chefs have been trained in proper Japanese fashion, crafting choice classics like negi hamachi (yellowtail & scallion) and Chirashi don bowls. Our nigiri and sashimi options are of the highest quality from our 4 weekly deliveries of beautiful, fresh fish. We pair it with a homemade soy sauce and a little wasabi for added flavor.
